The attributes of the indicators (Western) or rashis (Vedic) is the most complicated problem for Southern Hemisphere astrology. To figure out the attributes of the indicators, we should analyze how the Western and Vedic traditions assigned their attributes in the Northern Hemisphere. If we apply the exact same logic to the Southern Hemisphere, we can establish the qualities of the indicators/rashis.
We see that every sign/rashi obtains its attributes from 5 roots:
- Constellation
- Home/Bhava
- Mode
- Planetary Ruler
- Element
Whilst we view the zodiac from the Southern Hemisphere, we instantly see that the constellations and all-natural homes are reversed. The sign containing the vernal equinox is related with the initial Home. The subsequent sign is linked with the 2nd Property, and so on. Libra (Thula) is the vernal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere, so Libra is the initially Residence, although Aries (Mesha) is the 7th. Capricorn (Makara) is the 4th Property, Cancer (Karkata) the 10th. So our very first conclusion is that the constellation and homes are reversed or opposite. The 3 other basic roots (mode, ruler, element) need to align with either the constellation or the Residence.
We note the fortunate symmetry of mode. Cardinal indicators stay cardinal. If a sign is on an equinox or solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, it is on a cardinal point in the Southern Hemisphere. The identical symmetry applies to the fixed and mutable indicators. The hemisphere tends to make no distinction in mode. Our second conclusion is that there is no adjust in mode. The assignment of cardinal, fixed, and mutable modes remains the exact same as in the Northern Hemisphere.
We need to give far more believed, even so, to the planetary rulers of the indicators. The ancients assigned planetary rulers according to seasons. The luminaries (Sol/Surya and Luna/Chandra) have been assigned the indicators/rashis of greatest heat. The other planets had been assigned rulerships moving outward in Ptolemaic order (Mercury/Buddha, Venus/Sukra, Mars/Mangala, Jupiter/Guru, Saturn/Sani) till Saturn/Sani (and Uranus) had been assigned to the coldest months. If we do this in the Southern Hemisphere, we start out by assigning Luna rulership more than Capricorn and Sol rulership more than Aquarius. Mercury has rulership more than Sagittarius and Pisces. We continue till Saturn (Western) has rulership more than Cancer, Uranus more than Leo, and Sani (Vedic) more than Karkata and Simha. Our subsequent conclusion is that planetary rulership is connected with the Home, not the constellation.
If we temporarily ignore element, we see that the only distinction involving Southern and Northern Hemisphere indicators is a reversal of the constellation. As a result, the initially Property, Mars-ruled, cardinal sign (rashi) is Libra, not Aries. We should integrate the symbolism of the Scales to that of Mars, the initial Residence, and cardinal mode to define Libra. The final, and most intriguing root, on the other hand, is the element. Would Libra (Thula) be air or fire in the Southern Hemisphere? This is the most controversial elements of Southern Hemisphere indicators/rashis.
